Visuals in 12 Monkeys

Terry Gilliam who is the director of the film 12 Monkeys uses numerous repeated images that appear in different scenes.  The use of images that are repeated throughout the film are known as visual motifs and they are aspects of the theme of the film.  One example of this is young Cole's eyes at the beginning and then at the end of the movie.  Another example is the disaffection at the prison and then at the mental institution Cole is put in.  Along with the last example is the locked room in the mental hospital and the holding cell in the year 2035.  Another visual motif is the MRI machine and the time travel apparatus.  Lastly one of the biggest motifs I believe is the bear on the television, the bear in wasteland Philadelphia, and the bear in the store window.  Also there are some objects that relate to the visual motifs in the film.  The objects are goggles, tubes and tunnels, and the statues of animals.   The color in a film has many effects on the viewer.  For example color creates an impression and feeling of temperature.  An example of this in the film is when Cole comes up from underground to the wasteland Philadelphia in this scene we get the feeling that it has been abandoned for some time and also that it is very cold/dark due to the coloring.  Another effect color has on the viewer is that it attracts attention.  For example in the film at the end the scientist in the airport that is carrying the virus is wearing a yellow jacket, yellow is a very bright color so it grabs our eyes and we focus on that.  I would rate this movie a 7.5/10.
